THE MARK(S)

Lakeside Crafts Shops
Many Lakeside Craft Shops (LCS) pieces are marked with a colourful paper label that emulates a pressed wax seal enclosing a ‘Limberty’ woodworker with a plane above the motto “Art in the Home”, circled with the company name and location.

However, just as many pieces that turn up are unmarked, including what could be some of the later pieces, particularly those with wood inlay medallions, currently unattributed to any maker.

Many LCS pieces also have a white eight-sided paper label on the bottom with the model number written in pencil. See the image I have of one on the bottom of my G20 combination cellarette – smoker’s stand.

Woodcraft Guild

The classic Lakeside Craft Shops mark appears to be a derivative of an earlier incarnation of the company, the Woodcraft Guild (see more under the History section). Here is the Woodcraft Guild label that accompanies designs that were exactly the same as LCS designs.

THE CATALOGUES
As stated, what we know about the Lakeside Craft Shops is pretty much relegated to the 1912 LCS catalogue and brief history. Many items currently available or in the auction catalogues can be found in the 1912 catalogue.

Reprint of the 1912 LCS catalogue. Notice the mispelled word — purposely done?

However, there are many derivations of pieces from this catalogue, marked or unmarked, that regularly surface: magazine stands, bookstands, cellarettes/smoker’s stands, and a teacart(!). Are these just a result of the natural evolution of a piece over time or are these unknown/undocumented pieces? Back in 2005 another LCS catalogue with a different cover came to auction and was estimated to sell for $400-600. This could be the 1914 LCS catalogue that was mentioned in the October 1914 Grand Rapids Furniture Record.
