Bagpipes from Pakistan?

Bagpipes have been made in Pakistan and India for possible over a hundred years following the British-Scottish tradition when military forces were stationed there in the 1800s. While Hakam-Dim have been purportedly making bagpipes in the Sialkot District of Pakistan since the 1880s another source suggests the trade did develop until the 1920s when a Scottish trader explored the region as potential centre for bagpipe manufacturing. Pakistan is currently the world’s largest producer of bagpipes. This industry was worth $6.8M in 2010 and by all accounts in increasing. The Sialkot region is well known for producing a wide range of Scottish products including pipe band and other clothing.

Some of Pakistani bagpipes were well-made of fine materials and sound excellent, usually vintage examples. Here’s a link to a Youtube video of someone playing an simple, contemporary set and they sound not too bad. Most, unfortunately, are not well made and don’t sound very good.

I recently offered to try and get a set of Pakistan-made “McDuera” bagpipes up and running. They were purchased in Scotland by someone on vacation who wasn’t certain how to play them. While workmanship and materials leave a lot to be desired, I was successful in getting the drones going, with first generation Wygent drone reeds. However, in addition to sounding a little thin, they naturally tune in the lower 440s meaning an A chanter or possible a Bflat with fiddling, would have to be used with these pipes. The chanter that came with the pipes was essentially unusable, particularly the upper hand notes. Here’s a soundfile of me blowing the drones (without a blowpipe valve). The lower pitch is generally pleasing on most bagpipes, and may be the saving grace for these Pakistani bagpipes. However, overall they did lack some depth in the drones. The ultimate test would have been to play them with a chanter but I didn’t have one low enough.

Here’s some images of the pipes: yikes! I suspect that these pipes would crack and warp in short order if they were played for any length of time. My suggestion to the owner: hang them on the wall…
