Full Ivory, Two-Piece Mounts, Flat-topped Drone Caps, Ebony, Big Bores, Glasgow-Edinburgh Style, Maker?
A set of donated pipes were pulled from the band’s vault this week and I’ve been tasked with assessing them for this and that. The following images have been on Dunsire for a week or two, with some interesting comments from those in the know, and now they are here for your perusal. Note, there are a few images with JR Glen pipes for comparative purposes (probably not Glens).
Here’s what we can collectively ascertain at this point:
1) Ivory: Full elephant ivory (Schreger lines on every piece)
2) Mounts & Ferrules: Two-piece threaded projecting mounts (‘similar’ to JR Glen design). The ferrules are robust, with one scribe line and not unlike Henderson or perhaps Lawrie in style.
3) Style: Elements of Glasgow makers (profiles, stocks, similar to Henderson, Lawrie), elements of Edinburgh makers (flat-topped drone caps, ‘similar’ to JR Glen design). Note, one of the bushes was repaired, that is to say, reset, but likely upside down as the scribe lines are missing.
4) Wood: Likely ebony, perhaps cocus wood, or another tropical wood. Not African blackwood. Sap wood showing in multiple pieces. Multiple cracks as often seen in ebony or cocus wood. Lot’s of harmonics — see below.
5) Maker: No marks (save that someone crudely hand-scrawled Henderson on bottom cord guide of bass = wishful-thinking or cryptic clue!) Given the multiple lines of evidence there is no clear maker at this point, verified by Ron Bowen, one of the world’s foremost bagpipe experts.
6) Quality: Not the finest finishing work, but with the two-piece threaded mounts someone took their time with some parts of this set of pipes. I believe that all pieces are original to the set.
7) Age: A big guess wholly on my part. At least pre-1950 and possibly much closer to 1900.
8) Internal Dimensions: Large bores on most parts. For example, the tenor bushes are identical at 19/32″ (0.59375), while the bass bush is 21/32″ (0.65625); comparatively-speaking, those are pretty darn big, well into the upper quartile and perhaps upper 10% of measured pipes I have in my database (70+). The tenor drone stocks are both 25.5/32 (0.796875) and the bass drone stock is 26/32″ (0.8125). They are not tapered.
9) Tone: Beautiful, rich tone with a big bass that is integrated with the tenors. Plenty of church organ harmonics using Ezeedrones and a McCallum blackwood C chanter at 480Hz. These are nice sounding pipes. The tone is not unlike my cocus wood Hendersons with respect to harmonics.
10) Condition: They could use a good cleaning at a minimum, and would benefit from a good oiling and buffing. Lot’s of crud in the combing. Oh yes, the cracks, although tight and some crudely repaired, would need to be addressed.
